Biographical History

Russell M. Nelson (born 1924) is a ecclesiastical leader for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Utah.

Russell Marion Nelson was born on September 9, 1924 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a child. He earned his bachelor's and medical degrees from the University of Utah, and received a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. He practiced as a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon, medical researcher, and educator.

In 1945 he married Dantzel White in the Salt Lake Temple, and they had ten children. After her death in 2005, he married Wendy L. Watson in 2006.

Nelson has served in various positions in the Church, including as a counselor in a bishopric, high councilor, stake president, and regional representative. He became a member of the Quorum of the Twelve in 1984. In 2018 he was set apart as the 17th president of the Church.
