Biographical History

The Fowler family were from the New England area of the United States in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Samuel Fowler was born on December 14, 1790, in Williamstown, Massachusetts, James Fowler and Naomi Smedley. Susanna Hart was born on Decemeber 2, 1798, in Little Compton, Rhode Island, to Noah Hart and Scynthia Gray. Samuel and Susanna married approximately in 1810, and had six children together: Mary Caroline, George William, Samuel Wesley, Cynthia Matilda, Eliza Jane, and Susan Permelia. Susanna Hart died on December 22, 1834 in Avon, New York. Samuel married Sarah Ann Rhodes approximately in 1835. Samuel Fowler died on July 29, 1848, in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Materials includes nine handwritten letters sent by members of the Fowler family in the late 1800s. Correspondents include Eliza Jane Fowler Barnum (later Hohanshelt), Mary Caroline Fowler King, and Cynthia Matilda Fowler Jones, who were sisters, as well as other family members. Letters primarily contain discussions of family issues, and some of the letters contain information about visiting family members in Payson, Utah. Dated 1861-1896.
