 Family

Biographical History

The Keeler Family (1883- ) are descendants of Joseph Brigham Keeler and Martha Alice Fairbanks, who married in 1883. Joseph's family originated in Germany/Holland and lived predominantly in Burlington Co., NJ as early as the mid-1700s before moving to Utah in the 1800s.

The Keeler family first came to North America in the mid-1700s, when Samuel Keeler and Hannah Cox moved from Germany/Holland to settle in Burlington Co., NJ. After giving birth to 9 kids between 1779 and 1805, Samuel passed away in 1778 while his wife Hannah passed away in 1830. With exception to their daughter Hannah (who died in Nottawa, Michigan), the majority of their kids lived the rest of their lives in New Jersey - including their oldest child William.

Although all of William Keeler's family followed the same pattern as his siblings' families, when it came to John Budd Keeler, William's second-oldest son, this was not the case. While the only living child from his first wife Amy Hutchinson (a descendent of pilgrims John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley) later converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and moved to Utah, his third-youngest son born to him by his second wife Sarah Hartstone moved to Carlinville, Illinois. While the latter case is interesting to note, the majority of the materials in Special Collections belong to the former: Daniel Hutchinson Keeler's family.

When Daniel Keeler was born in 1811, he initially stayed in Pemberton, NJ like the majority of his family. However, after joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he eventually moved with his first wife Philinda from New Jersey to Utah in the 1850s. While making the trek west, Philinda died on the plains of Fort Laramie, WY. Within a year after her death, though, Keeler remarried to Ann Brown, a pioneer from England, in 1853. Together with his two wives, he had 6 children - four of whom lived unto adulthood including Joseph Brigham Keeler, a future student and faculty-member of Brigham Young Academy in Provo, Utah.

From then on, Joseph B. Keeler's family proved to be a prominent fixture not only in Utah County, but throughout Utah. While Joseph B. Keeler's family have connections to Payson thanks to his wife's connections to the area, his posterity including Daniel and Theodocia have connections to areas including Manti and Vernal, UT.
