Biographical History

The Dowdle family is the maternal side of the Ted & DeFonda Collier family. Originating as pioneer family from Alabama and Ohio, the family settled in Willard, UT, where the family had 2 wives and 11 children by December 1870.

The Dowdle family were a pioneer family who originated in states including Ohio and Alabama. After John Clark Dowdle, DeFonda's grandfather, was baptised as a member of the Church at the age of 11 in May 1848, he eventually married his first wife in 1857 - the same year his family moved from Alabama to Utah. Thirteen years after the marriage, Robert, DeFonda's father, was born in 1870 in Willard, Utah. After moving to Logan, UT and marrying Mary Dowdle, they eventually had DeFonda, the oldest daughter of the family and wife of Ted Collier.

Scope and Contents Collection contains the Colliers's various writings throughout the years. DeFonda kept a diary from 1916 to 1998. The collection also has many letters to and from various family members. Although Theodore never kept a formal diary except while he was on his mission, his letters to children (mostly Bob and Rae Ann) essentially serve that purpose.
