Thirty-three handwritten records. The items are largely in Latin with some Greek references. The materials relate to the politics, internal matters, theological controversies, and censorship in the Catholic Church. The items date mainly from the last quarter of the sixteenth to the first quarter of the seventeenth centuries. Also included are references to important earlier events such as the Council of Trent. Many of the items relate to restricting certian works from being read.

Council of Trent letters

Scope and Contents Official correspondence dealing with the Council of Trent, 1545-1563 which have been copied in a clear hand. The letters were written by different authors. They were men of ecclesiastical and political authority. They deal with matters relating to Catholic Church doctrine, liturgy, papal authority, and conciliar theory. They also deal with the various aspects of the conduct of the Council: its progress and decisions. The letters were addressed to Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, 1520-1589...

Handwritten correspondence, a list, and licenses, including one printed form with handwritten notations. The letters are by Francis, Pierre Francois Faius (Vicar-general of the Geneva diocese), Charles Auguste de Sales (Francis' nephew and successor as Bishop of Geneva), and Antoine Favre (a friend of Francis). Also included is a typewritten biography of Francis.

Letter from Pope Paul IV to Philip II to maintain his positions about the refusal of the abdication of Charles V, Philip's father. Also discusses that the papal authority has been discussed too much and obedience of Catholic States is needed. Dated 1555.

Handwritten letter on velum. Philip II states that Henry IV of France is Catholic again because of Henry's intervention in the religious wars in France. Philip II stresses the importance of a Catholic France and Europe that can grow under the protective wing of the Church. The item is unclearly dated and addressed.
