Administrative History

The BYU Salt Lake Center (1966-) was established as the third Brigham Young University continuing education center.

The BYU Salt Lake Center was formerly known as BYU Salt Lake Adult Education Center, which was established in 1959 by BYU president Ernest L. Wilkinson. It was renamed in 1966 as the BYU Salt Lake Center. Its education curriculum closely reflects that of other Brigham Young Univerity curriculums. Courses and programs offered include religion, genealogy, speech, history, recreation, writing, arts, education, and other fields. Those who served as chairmen of the center are as follows: Lynn M. Hilton (1959-1965), Keith L. Smith (1965-1970), Bruce M. Lake (1970-1973), R. Jan Thurston (1973-1981), Orson B. Roper (chairman 1981-1996), Lee J. Glines (director 1997-2010), Scott L. Howell (chairman 2010-2018), and Jay R. Young (chairman 2018-).
