James Jesse Strang papers

Correspondence of six items. Five are addressed to Strang and one is addressed to H. D. McCulloch, a follower of Strang. Also with the materials is a letter of appointment to make Strang a mail carrier. Also included is a handwritten copy of Strang's "Municipalities" which is found in chapter 27 of his "The Book of the Law of the Lord." With the materials is a copy of the Michigan legislature's rules dated 1854.

Contains various letters and papers written about the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its pioneer emigrants and immigrants. Includes information on the relationship of James Strang and Orson Hyde, as well as a copy of the Petition to the Governor of Utah to pardon various church leaders and other members being held in the Utah Penitentiary for polygamy. Materials undated, but probably written between 1878 and 1954 (when Samuel Russell was alive).

Scope and Contents Photographs of a handwritten and signed letter dated 18 June 1844 and addressed to James Strang. Smith responds to Strang's request to establish a stake of the Mormon Church in Wisconsin. Smith said that the inquiry was received negatively by the leaders of the Mormon Church, but later it was accepted more positiviely. Smith then records a vision he had in which he was carried to the Kingdom of Heaven by angels and spoke with God about the request. God told Smith that the stake was to be...
