Administrative history

The Southwestern States Mission (1898-1904) provided religious instruction for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Arkansas, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma Territory, and Indian Territory.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Church History, via WWW, April 6, 2016 (Central States Mission, founded 1898; previous mission name: Southwestern States; the Southwestern States Mission was renamed from the Indian Territory Mission in 1898; its name was changed again in 1904 to the Central States Mission and headquarters were moved from St. John, Kansas to Independence, Missouri; the boundaries remained unchanged when the Indian Territory mission became the Southwestern States Mission in 1898; the mission included Arkansas, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma Territory, and Indian Territory; the territory of Oklahoma was added to the Indian Territory Mission in 1894; then the states of Arkansas and Kansas were added in 1895; finally, Texas came within the boundaries of the mission in 1897; this necessitated a name change to the Southwestern States Mission in March 1898)
