Biographical History

The George A. Smith Chapter of the National Society of Sons of Utah Pioneers (1933-2006) was a Provo, Utah-based society that sponsored the Provo Pioneer Village as well as other activities to help preserve the memory and heritage of the early pioneers of the Utah Territory.

The George A. Smith Chapter of the National Society of Sons of Utah Pioneers (SUP) was officially organized on March 19, 1933, although it was derived from a forerunner group called "The Sons," which was organized in 1928. A year later, in 1934, the chapter's constitution and bylaws were published. The chapter's first president, Lawrence T. Epperson, was also elected. During its early years, the George A. Smith Chapter established the Provo Pioneer Village in Provo, Utah, and was primarily responsible for its operation and upkeep for over 70 years. The Provo Pioneer Village featured original buildings and artifacts from the nineteenth century as well as live demonstrations of some parts of a pioneer's daily work.

Due to the age and failing health of the majority of its members, the George A. Smith Chapter merged with the Brigham Young chapter of SUP in 2006, after which the Brigham Young chapter assumed the responsibilities of the operation of the Provo Pioneer Village.
