Administrative History

The Social Sciences/Education Department (est. 1973) is an administrative unit within the Harold B. Lee Library.

The Social Sciences/Education Department was first established in 1973, and included public services librarians with responsibility for fields related to social sciences. In 1979 the unit was merged with Documents and Maps to form the Information Services Division, but was reestablished in 1981.

The disciplines supported by the department have shifted periodically. In 1996, the Government Information Department and Tanner Management Library were absorbed into the unit. Further accretions included History (1999) and Microforms/Genealogy (2001). In 2006 Religion/Family History were split off to form their own department, but were reincorporated into Social Sciences in 2014.

The department is currently part of the Public Services Division of the library. Department chairs have included Marvin Wiggin (1987- ), Tom Wright ( -2006), Brian Champion (2006-2013), Rachel Wadham (2013- ).
