The Speech and Dramatic Arts Department (1967-1975) was an instructional unit in the College of Fine Arts and Communications at Brigham Young University.
In 1967 the Department of Dramatic Arts and the Department of Speech were combined to form the Speech and Dramatic Arts Department. This department helped students prepare to become teachers, directors, actors, clinicians, or members of any one of several related professions. This department focused on two separate subjects, speech and dramatic arts. The speech portion offered a public address major and selected courses for personal development in argumentation and debate, communication theory, discussion, public speaking, rhetoric, and speech criticism. The dramatic acts curriculum was designed to lead to professional competency in teaching on the secondary level, in acting, directing, or playwriting, or in technical theatre.
Lael J. Woodbury (1967-1972) and Parley W. Newman (1972-1975) served as department chairs until 1975 when the department was renamed the Department of Theatre and Cinematic Arts.

Brigham Young University theatre productions directed by Harold I. Hansen
Includes a scrapbook of programs and photographs for productions dated 1952-1964. The table of contents to the volume lists plays as late as 1966. Collection also contains a list of Hansen-directed productions, 1952-1956, which includes several names, presumably of cast members. A second list identifies productions dated 1969-1981, with specific performance dates; directors, including Hansen and others; and scene designers.
Communication centered instruction at BYU : philosophy, history, and departure
Traces history of use of communication-centered instruction (CCI) at BYU in speech therapy for children, 1960s-1980s. CCI was taught in the communicative habilitation major, successively offered by the departments of Speech and Dramatic Arts, and Educational Psychology.
Department of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology records
Contains records pertaining to the Department of Communication Disorders accreditation with the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) such as annual reports, correspondence, and updates on the ASHA's code of accreditation for graduate studies. Collection also includes sensitive information related to scholarship and graduate records and testing results.
Department of Educational Psychology records
Contains accreditation/reaccreditation reports, research tests and results, communicative disorder articles, and department correspondence. Materials date from between 1968 and 1991.

Includes the files and records of the department chair and other faculty.
