Administrative History

The Lilly Mining Company (1897-1914) was a mining company operating primarily in Juab County in Utah.

Its headquarters were located in Provo, Utah. The company was first incorporated in 1897 as the Lilly Mining Company. At its creation, Thomas Barrett served as president, P.P. Hindmarsh served as vice president, and W.M. McKendrick was the secretary and treasurer. The company worked out of the Lilly of the West lode mining claim located in the Tintic Mining District. Their primary ore was lead, with a small amount of silver.

In 1899, the company was involved in two land disputes with the Little Silver King company and Ralph M. Kellogg over overlapping boundaries between claims. The Lilly Mining Company easily settled the dispute with the Little Silver King through compromising to allow them to patent the land, and then returned the land after the patent was issued.

The dispute with Ralph M. Kellogg became a legal battle. The company and Kellogg ordered several land assessments in order to determine the lawful owner of the disputed land. In 1901, the judge overseeing the case granted part of Kellogg’s land to the Lilly Mining Company, but this ruling was appealed to the Utah Supreme Court because the land given to the company was not the land in question. The company won the case, received the land in question, and began further development of the main mine shaft.

In 1906, under the direction of company president Thomas Beesley, the company rejected an offer from the Provo Mining Company to consolidate companies and lowered the price of their stock to one half cent to pay off debts. By 1914, the Eureka Lilly Mining Company had obtained the majority of the shares in the company. The Lilly Mining Company appears to have dissolved since then.
