Administrative History

The Department of Archaeology (1947-1965) was an administrative unit at Brigham Young University.

The Department of Archaeology was organized in 1946 and in under the auspices of M. Wells Jakeman in the College of Arts and Sciences. It was transferred to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences in 1954. The Department of Archaeology served to prepare students with knowledge of Old World archaeology and ancient history, American archaeology and anthropology, and skills in research and writing in those areas. The department chairs were M. Wells Jakeman (1947-1960) and Ross T. Christensen (1960-1965).

Also contains twenty-one reels of film of excavations from Ray T. Matheny, of the Department of Anthropology, from approximately 1980-1990, including work in Mexico.
