Administrative History

C.C. Pierce & Co. (approximately 1900-1946) was a photography studio in Los Angeles, California.

The C.C. Pierce & Co. photography studio was established around 1900 at 313 Spring Street, Los Angeles, California, by Charles Chester Pierce. The business moved several times over the course of its roughly 40-year existence, and eventually expanded to the sale of photographic supplies. Notably, the photography studio functioned to create a vast picture library amassed by Pierce. Pierce both made his own photographs and acquired the negatives and prints of other regional photographers such as Emil Ellis, Parker and Knight, Ramsey, Herve Friend, L.M. Clendenon, George P. Thresher, George Wharton James, and F.M. Huddleston. Pierce later erased their signatures and replaced them with his own, before organizing the lot into subject files. Pierce then created an archive which he called the "C.C. Pierce Collection of Rare, Historical and Curious Photographs, Illustrating California, the Pacific Coast and the Southwest", which became an important resource for the studio's patrons, such as boosters and researchers.
