Administrative History

Food Services (1953-1993) was an administrative and services unit at Brigham Young University. The unit provided dining and other food options on campus.

The Food Services program was established at the university under Ben E. Lewis in 1953. Wells and Myrle Cloward came to the university in 1953, and Wells was appointed manager. Food Services provided food to students and faculty members at a reasonable cost. These services were initially provided in the men's and women's residence halls and in a cafeteria and snack bar located in the Joseph Smith Building. Over time, the Food Service facilities expanded to include cafeteria service, snack bars, vending, concession stands, a bakery, and catering services.

The unit was initially organized within the university's Auxiliary Services division. In 1969 the unit was moved to be directly supervised by the Assistant Vice-President for Business, then in 1973 to the Assistant Vice-President for Business Affairs. In 1975, it returned to Auxiliary Services. The unit was renamed as Dining Services in 1993.

Directors of Food Services included Wells Cloward (1953-1985) and Samuel Brooks (1985-1993).
