Brigham Young University. Counseling Service

 Organization

Administrative History

The Counseling Service (1946-1967) was a student services unit at Brigham Young University. The service had responsibility for incoming student registration, counseling, occupation advising, and testing services.

The Counseling Service was established by president Howard McDonald in 1946 as a means of assisting returning students after World War II. Initially run as a university committee, the service was staffed part-time by faculty members. During the Ernest L. Wilkinson Administration staffing was shifted away from faculty to professional counseling staff.

Among its responsibilities, between 1946 and 1956 the Counseling Service was charged with assisting and counseling new freshmen and sophomores during the registration process. Other regular responsibilities of the unit included academic advisement, personal counseling, psychiatric services, occupational counseling, and testing services.

Chairmen of Counseling Services included Antone K. Romney (1946-1955), Howard T. Reid (1955-1957), Clyde A. Parker (1957-1966), and Vern H. Jensen (1966-1967).

The unit operated under the direction of Special Services (1946-1955) and Student Personnel Services (1955-1967). In 1967 the unit was reorganized as the Counseling Center.
