Administrative History

The Department of Genealogy (1962-1978) was an instructional unit at Brigham Young University. The department taught classes on genealogical research and prepared students conduct family history work.

The Department of Genealogy was established in 1962 as a program in the Technical and Semi-Professional Institute in the General College. After the renaming of the institute in 1964, the department remained under the institute chair. Initially offering undergraduate minors and a two-year associate's degree program, the department expanded its offerings in 1967 to provide a bachelor's degree. Unfortunately the number of professional genealogists produced by the department outstripped demand and the degree programs were discontinued in 1972.

After the cancellation of its degree programs, the department was transferred from the General College to become part of the Institute of Genealogical Research in the College of Social Sciences. Course offerings were adjusted to focus on meeting the personal genealogical needs of students. In 1978 the department was reorganized as part of the Department of Family and Local History Studies.

Department chairs included Ernest C. Jeppsen (1962-1964) and Norman Edgar Wright (1964-1978).
