Administrative History

The Bank of Northern Arizona (1890-1923) was founded by Jesse Nathaniel Smith and his son, Joseph West Smith, who was president of the Snowflake branch until the bank's liquidation.

In 1890, Jesse Nathaniel Smith organized the Bank of Northern Arizona from a family savings bank. His son, Joseph West Smith subsequently became the president of the Snowflake branch until its temporary closing at the beginning of World War I. In 1923, the bank was liquidated by the government for its assests and reserves being lower than federal requirements.
