He separates these superstitions into three types-physical, religious and idiosyncratic-and finds that each type of ritual helps players to find a rhythm, settle their minds, and ensure their safety. Included are the traditions of eating fries with an entire bottle of ketchup, wearing lucky boy scout socks, and wearing specific numbers when playing the game.
