Scope and Contents Photocopy of a handwritten letter. The item is dated Sept. 14, 1857 and is addressed to "Major McCullogh" and Lewis Brunson (1831-1888). Brunson was the bishop in Fillmore, Utah for the Mormon Church. Young states that preparations are to be made to deal with the advancing federal troops which were part of the Utah Expedition, 1857-1858. He also outlines the nature of the defense of Utah. The two items are identical in content, but one appears to be a rough draft of the other. Young petitions the federal government for funds to aid in the westward migration of Mormons from Nauvoo, Illinois, with Vancouver Island as a possible destination. Brigham Young letters to Thomas L. Kane

Letters were handwritten by Brigham Young to Thomas L. Kane on October 30, 1854. In the letters Young asks Kane to serve as Utah's territorial delegate to Congress. The two letters are identical and were sent separately to ensure delivery. Collection also includes photocopies of the letters.

Collection contains one bound photocopied typed transcript of a diary written by Emily Young. She writes about her daily activities in Salt Lake City, Utah, as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and as one of the wives of Brigham Young. Also includes articles of interest likely copied from newspapers and magazines. The last page of the volume contains a life sketch and image of Emily Young. Dated 1874 to 1899.

Joseph Young affadavit of Haun's Mill massacre

Materials include Joseph Young's original eyewitness account of events that occured during the Haun's Mill massacre on October 30, 1838. His account was witnessed and sealed on June 4, 1839, by John Woods of the Circuit Court in Adams County, Missouri. Young describes the mob, his escape, and the conditions of the victims. Young also writes that he helped bury the dead. The account was later used by the Church as evidence of the sufferings of its members in Missouri. Dated June 4, 1839.

Kimball Young research notes

Scope and Contents

Photocopies of research notes and drafts of chapters of the book "Isn't One Wife Enough?" The originals are housed in the Garett Theological Seminary Library. This work is considered to be the first serious study of Mormon polygamy done by a trained sociologist. In the published version of the book, Young changed the names of the characters he wrote about. But in his notes the correct names are available.
