Holograph notebook (plus 4 p. partial typescript containing only the journal entries) which contains a record of depts, expenses, and later experiences after Matthews left his home in Colon, Michigan on April 15, 1851 bound for California by boat. The journal describes his travels through Mexico from Vera Cruz to Acapulco, comments about the U.S. - Mexican War, and gives details of his boat trip to San Francisco.

Photocopies of a microfilm copy of handwritten documents. These materials are in Spanish and relate to the holdings of the Miranda family largely in Texas and Arizona. One item, dated 1848, relates to the war with the United States.

Handwritten poem commemorating the activities of the Mormon Battalion in service of the United States during the war with Mexico (1845-1848). The item was written in ink. "By John Hancock who went in the Battalion in 1847" has been penciled in at the bottom of the item in another hand. No John Hancock is listed among members of the battalion.

Scope and Contents Photocopy of a handwritten autobiography and diary with a typescript of the item. Pettigrew (apparently also spelled Pettegrew) started his autobiography in 1840. His diary is sporatic and has many gaps. Pettigrew writes about his conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1832, his life in Missouri during the persecutions of Mormons there, his experiences in Nauvoo, Illinois, his work as an LDS missionary, his participation in the migration of Mormons from Nauvoo,...

Typewritten copy of a letter, dated September 15, 1847, composed at Little Rock, Arkansas, and addressed to John D. Phoenix of New York City. Pike was serving as captain of volunteers to fight in the war with Mexico. He writes to David Phoenix telling him of the death of John D. Phoenix and describes the area and the condition of the troops.
