Unbound pages with handwritten entries, mostly in pencil, and a bound journal with handwritten entries in ink. The former covers 1876-1878 and the latter 1875-1876 as well as part of 1885. Both largely describe farming activities.

Ammon M. Tenney papers

Photocopy of typescript. Includes a number of letters written to Tenney by such people as Brigham Young (1801-1877), Wilford Woodruff (1807-1898), and John W. Young (1844-1924) concerning the purchase of land at St. Johns, Arizona, for Mormon settlement, missionary work among the Indians, and obtaining work for Mormon settlers by bidding on raliroad contracts. Some of Tenney's replies are also included. Folder also includes typescript copy of Tenney's journal for 1875-1876.

James Parshall Terry journal

Scope and Contents

Handwritten biographical sketch of Terry's life which describes Mormon difficulties in Missouri, campsites during the exodus west, pioneer life in southern Utah, and Terry's mission to Canada and northeastern U.S., 1887-1888. Also an account of Terry's activities in Echo Canyon during the Utah War, 1857. The journal was written in a watermaster's log which included previous entries.

A test of faith : Jane Elizabeth James and the origins of the Utah black community

Photocopies of typescript of an unpublished article. The item is a biography of Jane Elizabeth James (1820?-1908) which also presents information on the blacks in early Utah. Jane, a black, was converted to the Mormon Church and lived in Nauvoo, Illinois, and later emigrated to Salt Lake City, Utah. She was active in the Mormon Church and was married twice. The author has also included typescripts of documents relating to Jane's life.

Scope and Contents Photocopy of a microfilm copy of a typescript. The item is an autobiography of William Theobald. Also included is an index to the item. Theobald was born in England in 1813 and worked on his father's farm until he was sixteen years old. He later became a carpenter and a wheelwright and served in the British navy from 1836 to 1840. He married Martha Lane in 1841, joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1848, and migrated to Utah in 1851. He worked as a police officer...

Scope and Contents note From the Collection: The Thomas Parkinson family collection has been arranged in three series. The first series is comprised of personal items which belonged to Thomas and Mary Ann Bryant Parkinson and include his 1855 priesthood ordination in San Bernardino, his personal journal, and original letters from family members in England and Australia dating as early as 1856. These letters are written to Thomas and Mary Ann Bryant Porter Parkinson, and to Thomas's sister, Sarah Parkinson Rodwell Stapley....
