Lewis Robison correspondence

Scope and Contents Two letters addressed to, and one written by, Robison at Fort Bridger in 1857. The earliest, written by Louis Vasquez on April 30, informs Robison that Vasquez and Jim Bridger will send someone to collect balance due on purchase of the fort. On verso is Robison's May 27 letter to Daniel H. Wells, forwarding the Vasquez letter. Andrew Jackson Shupe diary

Scope and Contents This is a typescript of a diary of a Mexican War soldier who served in the "Mormon Battalion." The diary was kept from 16 July 1846 to 10 Sept. 1847 with a few entries for the years 1848-1855. He was also among the first groups to enter Salt Lake Valley in July of 1847. He went to Winter Quarters in August 1847 and went to Ogden, Utah in 1852. There are numerous gaps in this diary. The entries tend to be short but some are lengthy and detailed. Also includes a handwritten biography of his mother, Emma Seraphine West Smith, and two handwritten historical articles, one describing the building of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad in New Mexico, and the other relating Indian stories.

Charles B. Stuart letters to Nathaniel B. Baker

Scope and Contents Contains two letters from Charles Stuart, railroad designer, to Nathaniel B. Baker, Adjutant General of the Iowa Militia. Both letters concern the building of railroads in Iowa that would connect with the transcontinental railroad, which was about to be built, beginning in Omaha, Nebraska. The first letter, dated January 15, 1860, is on “Office of the American Railroad Bureau” letterhead, and discusses the Lyons Railroad.
