Scope and Contents note From the Collection: The Thomas Parkinson family collection has been arranged in three series. The first series is comprised of personal items which belonged to Thomas and Mary Ann Bryant Parkinson and include his 1855 priesthood ordination in San Bernardino, his personal journal, and original letters from family members in England and Australia dating as early as 1856. These letters are written to Thomas and Mary Ann Bryant Porter Parkinson, and to Thomas's sister, Sarah Parkinson Rodwell Stapley....

There are many gaps in the entries including a sixteen-year gap from 1861 to 1877. Handwritten diaries for the years 1881, 1906-1916, and 1934-1936. The 1881 diary covers the time Spilsbury was a missionary for the Mormon Church in England, the 1906-1916 diary was kept while Spilsbury lived in Toquerville, Utah, and the final journal was kept while he was in Salt Lake City, Utah. Spilsbury writes about his work in the Mormon Church, farming, and international news.

Scope and Contents Contains diaries, notes, correspondence, dictionaries, surveys, bonds, certificates, horoscopes, and military orders. The correspondence was to and from John Steele, other family members, and acquaintances. The materials document the activities of the Steele family, John's militia and Mormon Battalion activities, his missions to England and to the Indians, his migration to Utah, and his life in Utah and Nevada. Theobald was born in England in 1813 and worked on his father's farm until he was sixteen years old. He later became a carpenter and a wheelwright and served in the British navy from 1836 to 1840. He married Martha Lane in 1841, joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1848, and migrated to Utah in 1851. He worked as a police officer...
