Scope and Contents Photocopy of handwritten lists. One item is dated 30 June and presents the names of the passengers of the 'Horizon' that left from Liverpool, England, in 1856. The 856 entries include the names, occupations, and ages of the passangers and where they were born. Many of the passangers on the 'Horizon' were Mormon immigrants who migrated to Utah in the ill-fated Martin handcart company later that year. Scope and Contents Handwritten diary kept in the Pitman style of shorthand. A typewritten transcript of the diary from 1 March to 31 December 1860 is also included. The rest of the journal is available only in shorthand. Smith writes about his daily activities including attending Mormon Church meetings, courting "Emma," and his relationship with his family. On 1 July: "Went and walked with Emma after meeting. I offended her unconsciously. Went home with her and obtained her forgiveness for my transgression."...

Photocopy of a 270-page volume. Author briefly recounts his ancestry, early life, and conversion to Mormonism. Diary reflects his missionary activities in the counties of Essex, Suffolk, Middlesex, and Herefordshire. Includes occasional references to Charles W. Penrose, Martin Slack, and others. A typed transcript of the document, prepared in 2000 by Special Collections at Brigham Young University, is also included.

Theobald was born in England in 1813 and worked on his father's farm until he was sixteen years old. He later became a carpenter and a wheelwright and served in the British navy from 1836 to 1840. He married Martha Lane in 1841, joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1848, and migrated to Utah in 1851. He worked as a police officer...
