Smith, an apostle and later president, of the Mormon Church. The bulk of the collection deals with the years 1870 to 1918. These research files are documentation for Kinney's proposed biography of Smith.

Typed copy of a letter dated July 25, 1863 and addressed to "Dear Nephew." The item was written in Colchester in an unnamed state. Millikin mentions a visit by Samuel H. B. Smith (1838-1914) Joseph F. Smith (1838-1918) and states that Joseph Smith (1832-1914) was gaining many converts to the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Typed copy of two letters. Smith's letter is dated August 14, 1863 and was addressed to his cousin "John," presumably John Smith of Salt Lake City, Utah. Smith mentions the visit of two other cousins, Joseph F. Smith and Samuel H. B. Smith. Also included is a letter by Don C. S. Millikin dated August 19, 1863 and addressed to "Dear Friend and Cousin." Millikin also writes about the visit of Samuel and Joseph.

He mentions how he felt after the second day of his examination before a U.S. Congressional committee investigating the Mormon Church. The hearings related to the question of whether or not to seat Senator Reed Smoot of Utah.

Scope and Contents Handwritten and signed letter dated 7 Oct. 1889. The item was addressed to Samuel Russel. Smith had asked Russell to take charge of the sawmill connected with the Hawaiian colony in Skull Valley, Utah and expresses regret that Russell turned him down. Smith said, "I had no special manifestations of the Spirit about it."
