Contains correspondence to or from Granville Stuart, spanning the years 1863-1917. Stuart copied most of his incoming and outgoing in letterpress copybooks. The others were placed in files alphabetically. The letters mostly pertain to his life and activities while he was living in Montana.

Scope and Contents

This series contains Granville Stuart's writings, circa 1857-1915. Most of the writings are historical sketches or experiences that happened to Stuart throughout his career and travels. The majority of the writings deal with the cattle industry, expeditions and trips (such as navigating down the Missouri River), Native Americans, and pioneers. He also included weather records and reminiscences about his life. Stuart wrote most of these while living in Montana.

ALS's addressed to Weeden's wife, Jane, and one ALS to his brother Osmond. The letters describe camp life, gold mining, Indian dangers, buffalo, problems with mail service and different towns in Montana Territory. Instructions to his wife are also included.
