Scope and Contents

Materials consist of manuscript scores written and arranged by Robert P. Manookin. The music is primarily vocal music, both sacred and secular, instrumental arrangements primarily for organ or keyboard, with occasional other orchestrations, and large scale ensemble works. Dated approximately 1935-1997.

Scope and Contents "The Mormon Pioneers" is the seventh album in the Columbia Records Legacy Collection and was produced by Goddard Lieberson with the aid of the Special Projects Staff: Charles Burr. This pageant was presented by the Los Angeles Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and is a musical story of Mormon pioneers. Also included is music relating to The Grubstake, Leisure Lines, and The Concertmaster: A Make Believe T.V.

Collection consists of published scores with accompanying manuscripts and/or photocopies of many of Robertson's works, as well as computer-burned sound recordings and a typewritten draft copy of Wilson's book, "Leroy Robertson: Music Giant from the Rockies," with annotations, circa 1930-2007.

The item describes Robertson's life and works, including his teaching in the music department of Brigham Young University (1925-1948) and the University of Utah (1948-1965) and his involvement with music in the Mormon Church. Also included is a published copy of the book signed by the author.

He lived in England, joined the Mormon Church in 1850, married Mary Morton in 1852, and migrated to Utah in 1856 with the Martin handcart company. He soon went to Parowan, Utah, where he led the local choir for 62 years. He married a second wife, Mary Mitchell, in 1860 and took a third wife, Carole Mortensen, in 1867.
