Handwritten and signed letter relaying a provisions report to the Commissary General, George Gibson.
Baron Cuthbert Collingwood letter
1 handwritten letter (1 page); 22 October 1805; 21 x 33 cm; light blue "crown" stationary, with fine watermark; (unsigned) "General Order" dated "Euryalus Cape Trafalgar 22 Oct 1805." Letter written in honor of the British naval victory at Trafalgar the preceding day: "A day should be appointed of general humiliation before God, and thanksgiving for his merciful goodness."
Lafayette Frost letter and biography
Photocopy of a handwritten letter and a handwritten biography. The date of the biography is uncertain. The letter was written by Frost while serving in the Mexican War with the Mormon Battalion when he was in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Frost writes about the scenery along the line of march, his duties, a change in leadership, and about his illness.
Lord Frederick North letter and lithograph
Handwritten and signed letter dated 1 June 1779. North authorizes payment of over 8000 pounts to supplies of provisons for British troops in Canada. The item is also signed by Beauchamp, Palmerston, and Richard Atkinson, one of the suppliers. Also included is a lithograph of North made in 1833.
Holy Roman Emperor Charles V letter to Nicholas de Artieta
Handwritten letter addressed to Nicholas de Artieta dated 15 Feb. 1520. Charles had chosen Artieta's ship to transport Charles to Germany. Charles requires proper artillery proteciton without depriving the northern provinces, particularly Viscaya, of weapons.
Russell Gordon Carter letter to Robert Bruce
ALS (plus 1 p. typescript) in which Carter comments that the printing of articles critical of George A. Custer is inappropriate since Mrs. Custer is still living. Carter expresses the belief that the true story of the Custer tragedy will not be told until the notes of Walter Mason Camp are available.
Zebulon Montgomery Pike letters
Miscellaneous letters relating to administrative matters in the US Army including orderings of materials, receipts, and letters of recommendation for subordinates. One of the items is a signature certifying the orders of Major General Howe. The materials relate to the War of 1812 or shortly before. All items were signed by Pike.
The life sketch of David Pinkney Rainey
Biography of David Pinkney Rainey (1815-1888) by an unknown author. Rainey was baptised into the Mormon Church in 1843. He served on two missions for that church and was in the "Mormon Battalion" (1846-1847) during the war with Mexico. He came to Utah and lived in Provo and Richmond in that state.
Abraham Lincoln pardon and correspondence
Collection includes originals and photocopies of correspondence between Abraham Lincoln and Andrew G. Ege from 1864. Includes a letter from Ege requesting a discharge from the draft for his son, and the reply from Lincoln in which the request is granted.
Charles A. Lindbergh letter
Handwritten and signed letter. This item was written at the War Department on Dec. 13, 1927. Lindbergh gives Major H.S. Burwell "Many thanks" for his cooperation.
