This series contains papers generated by and for James Stuart, circa 1860-1909, while he was living in Montana. There are letters, both incoming and outgoing, receipts, documents, agreements, account books, and other miscellaneous material. Many pertain to his personal life, trips, and also his time as a miner.

Collection includes information on the life of Granville Stuart, including diaries, correspondence, personal writings, sketches, photographs, and other materials. These items document his life from the 1860s to the 1910s. Handwritten and signed letter, dated April 23, 1867, and addressed to Oscar B. Ireland. Thayer writes about the gold rush to Montana in 1866. Also included is a letter from Appleton Sturgis dated 1866 which includes a pen-and-ink drawing of an American flag with 34 stars.
