Scope and Contents Carbon copy of a typewritten autobiography by a man named Baynes who never presented his first name. The author of the item, son of Charles Baynes (1798- ), was born in Clinton, Georgia in 1824. He lived in Georgia, attended college in New Haven, Connecticut (probably Yale University), and eventually settled in New Orleans, Louisiana. Scope and Contents Handwritten diary and correspondence. The letters relate primarily to business and family matters. Also included are materials relating to astrology and horoscopes. The diary was kept from 1861 to 1862 when Hadley was serving with the Iowa Volunteers. His accounts are often vivid and detailed. He writes about army life and actual combat.
