Rippingille tells Brown how long it would take him to travel by car from San Francisco, California, to Ely,Nevada. He also tells Brown how long it would take for him to drive to and from towns and places near Tooele and Salt Lake City, Utah.

He tells about his experiences in the Mormon Battalion and the discovery of gold in California in 1848. Smith also writes about his coming to Utah and his life in Manti, Utah. Detailed diary entries describe much of the daily routine, weather, and labor involved in the journey. Cauthorn mentions company politics, trouble with Indians, his feelings about leaving his wife and child in Missouri, and a group of Mormons apparently leaving Utah.
