Photocopy of a transcript. The journal describes the travels of an unnamed individual through the states of Missouri, Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, and California as well as a return trip by sea from California through Panama. The document ends as the author approaches New York City by sea. Through out the journal the author gives descriptions of his surroundings as well as incidents. This item is dated from April 14, 1865 to Nov. 9, 1865.

Handwritten letters dated 1866 and addressed to Kuhn's parents and to other friends and family members. The items were written in Nebraska, Wyoming, and Utah. Kuhn tells about his experiences on the Oregon and the California trails. He writes about meeting Mormons in Salt Lake City and elsewhere in Utah and gives his impressions of them.

Typescript of a diary (34 leaves) by Eva Morse which records the overland journey by railroad from Compton, Illinois, to Eddyville, Iowa. From there she proceeded with a wagon train to Stockton, California. Included are descriptions of Indians and sarcastic remarks about a Mormon handcart company.

Mimeographed copy of a typewritten history. Watkins migrated to Utah in 1856 with the ill-fated Martin Handcart Company. He writes of an incident during the trek with that group. On a very cold night in Wyoming, Watkins and two others found, killed, and butchered an ox.

Handwritten letter composed on May 20, 1850 near the upper crossing of the Platte River. This item was addressed to his wife while he was traveling to the gold fields of California. It describes traveling along the Oregon Trail.

Photocopy of a handwritten diary. Reed writes about his journey to the gold fields in California in 1850 and his return to Illinois the following year. He returned by way of ship to Panama and also by ship to New York City. The account is detailed and includes financial records.

Scope and Contents Materials include original handwritten reminiscences and diaries of Samuel Hollister Rogers from 1841 to 1886. Rogers writes about his life as a Mormon in Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois. He also tells about his service with the Mormon Battalion, his migration to Utah from California in 1848, his missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and his involvement in polygamy. Handwritten and signed letter, dated 1849, and addressed to "Dear Rebecca." Schrock describes his overland journey from Missouri to California to visit the gold fields. He also writes about the reputation the Mormons had at the time. He says that "vegetables, milk, butter, cheese and other things" could be purchased at the "Mormon City" (Salt Lake City, Utah) but adds that the Mormons often cheated people coming West.
