Typewritten copy of a story of Indians stealing cattle and horses near Parowan, Utah, on 21 July 1867 during Utah's Black Hawk War. The attempt to take the cattle was thwarted, and the Indians were forced to retreat. The author of the item is unidentified. He writes that he was "nine or ten" at the time of the raid and that his uncle was Joseph Fish, a prominent militia leader in Parowan. The writer also states that he was the brother of Horace Calvin Smith.

Handwritten letter, signed by surname only, and addressed to J. M. Curtis, Indian Interpreter, Denver. It reports on a skirmish in 1873 between eighteen Ute Indians and a group of Arapaho and Cheyenne Indians at Deer Trail, Colorado.

Biography of Alexander Melville

Photocopy of a microfilm copy of a typewritten autobiography. Melville was born in Scotland in 1821, worked on a ship that hunted whales, lived in Nauvoo, Illinois, and migrated to Utah in 1852. He lived in Provo, Utah, campaigned against Utah Indians in 1853, and settled in Fillmore, Utah. He died in 1911.

Grant N. Mildenhall letter and newspaper clippings

Scope and Contents Photocopies of a typewritten letter, photographs, and newspaper clippings. The clippings were taken from the 1877 editions of Salt Lake Tribune newspaper. Mildenhall writes to "Duane" arguing that the whites killed during Utah's Black Hawk War (1865-68) and during other Indian uprisings in Utah were not killed by Indians but by Freemasons and Mormons. Mildenhall says that these and many other killings in Mormon and Utah history were done according to the Mormon doctrine of Blood...

Photocopy of a handwritten diary. Smith writes of his early life until he started his diary in 1846. He tells about his experiences in the Mormon Battalion and the discovery of gold in California in 1848. Smith also writes about his coming to Utah and his life in Manti, Utah. He also relates incidents in the Black Hawk War when the whites fought the Ute Indians. There are many gaps.

Handwritten lists and meeting minutes of the Sons and Dauthers of Black Hawk and Indian War Veterans in Springville, Utah from 1946 to 1954. The lists date from 1908 and include the name, residence, age, war in which they served (Walker, Tintic, or Black Hawk), length of service, under whose command served, and death dates--when appropriate--of 1731 veterans of the major Utah Indian wars.
