Abstract

Includes original, photocopied, and published music scores by De Azevedo, composed for musical and film productions with Latter-day Saint (LDS) themes. Also includes recordings of music scores in the following formats: audiocassette, audiotape, videotape, compact disc, and phonograph record. The collection sheds significant light on the development of the LDS popular music genre.

Collection includes the papers of early Utah resident Samuel Stephen jones, including letters, a short autobiography, naturalization records, the lyrics to "Hand Cart Song," a Utah militia commission document, a short, transcribed autobiography of Jones, receipts, a notebook, and stock certificates. Materials dated approximately 1850 to 1914.

Scope and Contents Contains materials written by and collected by Durham related to Utah and Latter-day Saint music and musicians. Most of the material consists of drafts of chapters from Durham's book on Maurice Abravanel, complete with notes and edits. Also contains some research material, including a few clippings and a list of recordings of the Utah Symphony. Includes a copy of the book "Worship and Music In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint," a book with programs given by the Utah Symphony, three pamphlets of questions on the Utah Symphony Orchestra, programs from other performances, flyers, and magazines. Also includes audiocassettes from class lectures and tapes of "Abravanel Hour," as well as one floppy disk. Materials date from between 1934 and 1994.

Many of these materials relate to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, including correspondence on replacing the conductor of the choir and clippings of reviews of their performances.
