Scope and Contents

Typewritten copies of letters written between 1864 and 1868. The volume is entitled: "Letters Sent During Mountain & Colorado Trips." Also included is a typewritten autobiography entitled: "The Man of the Mountains: The Life of David C. Collier." The author is listed as "An Old-Timer" who is believed to be Collier himself.

Typescripts and photocopies of many of these items are also found with the collection. Some of the materials have been bound into books. The collection relates primarily to Joab Collier (1855-1918) and Theodocia Keeler Collier (1858-1912). The Colliers were Mormons who lived in Provo, Vernal, and in Salt Lake City, Utah. Contains six DVDs (three reference copies and three preservation copies) containing eight interviews with individuals who knew Helen Foster Snow. Individuals interviewed are An Wei, Huang Hua, Lu Cui, Gong Pusheng, Liu Lizhen, Lu Wanru, Israel Epstein, and Yu Jianting. Interviews were migrated from 16 mm film to DVD by Combat Films and Research and Dodge Billingsley, and were used in the production of the documentary Helen Foster Snow: Witness to Revolution (2000).

This collection consists of letters and reports sent to Charles C. Comstock concerning his search for the bodies and possessions of his daughter, son-in-law Albert A. Stone, and grandson who all perished when the ship "Brother Jonathan" sank near Crescent City, California 30 July 1865. One letter contains copied accounts of the disaster. The remainder relates to the efforts to identify the victims of the shipwreck either through physical appearance or through artifacts.
