Scope and Contents Photocopy of microfilm copy of a typed autobiography. Cheney writes about her early life and her conversion to the Mormon Church in 1837. She moved with her family to Nauvoo, Illinois, where she heard sermons by Joseph Smith (1805-1844), the first president of the Mormon Church. She also heard Brigham Young (1801-1877), second president of the Mormon Church. Talitha married William Howard Avery in 1844. He died in 1847. She migrated to Utah in 1853 and married Elam Cheney. Typewritten book draft with handwritten corrections. The item is an early draft of "Mormon Enigma" which length was later reduced as requested by the publisher, Doubleday & Company. The manuscript is a biography of Emma Hale Smith, first wife of the first president of the Mormon Church, Joseph Smith.
