Jesse O. Ballenger letters
Photocopies of typescripts of four letters by Ballenger, three addressed to President Brigham Young and one to Apostle John Taylor outlining conditions in the settlement at Sunset Crossing, Arizona. Content includes relationship with local Native American tribes. Dated 1876-1877.
James Stephens Brown diary
Photocopy of typescript. Author recounts his call to serve as a missionary among the Navajo Indians by Mormon church president Brigham Young (1801-1877); the trip to Arizona; his activities among the Indians; and his return to Utah a year later.

Holograph diary which contains blessings given to Calkins in 1850, experiences as a worker in the Mission home and as Mission President, letters received from Brigham Young and family, and letters sent to Brigham Young and family. A short biography is included with the diary.

Mormon Church in Hawaii
Photocopies of correspondence, reports, histories, petitions, resolutions, and miscellaneous items relating to the Mormon Church in Hawaii. Most of the materials are associated with missionary work, and most date from the nineteenth century. A few items are in the Hawaiian language. One letter was written by the Mormon prophet, Brigham Young (1801-1877), and several letters are addressed to Daniel H. Wells, the Mormon apostle.
Thomas Pierce certificate
Photocopy of a handwritten and printed certificate dated 10 Aug. 1856 certifying that Thomas Pierce had been called to serve as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England. The item was signed by the "First Presidency" of that Church.

Levi Stewart letter from Kanab, to Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, Utah
Photocopy of typescript. Short report to Brigham Young (1801-1877) on the efforts to organize the missionaries called to settle along the Little Colorado River. Includes list of prospective missionaries that Stewart recommended calling and a list of some who had agreed to go, but had not yet arrived in Kanab. The writer also requests counsel from Young on various matters pertaining to the mission.
Ammon M. Tenney papers
Photocopy of typescript. Includes a number of letters written to Tenney by such people as Brigham Young (1801-1877), Wilford Woodruff (1807-1898), and John W. Young (1844-1924) concerning the purchase of land at St. Johns, Arizona, for Mormon settlement, missionary work among the Indians, and obtaining work for Mormon settlers by bidding on raliroad contracts. Some of Tenney's replies are also included. Folder also includes typescript copy of Tenney's journal for 1875-1876.
