Eugene Banks diary

Scope and Contents

Handwritten diary which contains an account of military life during the Civil War from a Southern officer's point of view. Banks includes descriptions of the Battle of Missionary Ridge, the Confederate retreat, and the execution of four deserters. Collection also includes a typescript of the diary and a description of the diary with background information on Banks written in 1976 by Darrell Batson. Photocopies of materials also included with collection.

Scope and Contents Photocopies of handwritten letters. All of the items were written to Goodwin's sister, Alice. Goodwin wrote these letters while in Confederate service in Virginia and Tennesee. Goodwin tells about burying a friend, rumors, army life, and mentions the battle of Corinth and Sharpsburg (Antietam). Scope and Contents Handwritten diary and correspondence. The letters relate primarily to business and family matters. Also included are materials relating to astrology and horoscopes. The diary was kept from 1861 to 1862 when Hadley was serving with the Iowa Volunteers. His accounts are often vivid and detailed. He writes about army life and actual combat.
