The bulk of the collection deals with the years 1870 to 1918. These research files are documentation for Kinney's proposed biography of Smith.

Woodruff signed 14 of the letters as Lewis Allen, a pseudonym used by him during the time he was on the underground, hiding from federal officials. The letters were addressed to Thomas P.
