Barney collected traditions practiced by dancers with their pointe shoes. Included are the traditions of strengthening feet by wrapping them in masking tape, adding elastic to ensure a more secure shoe, and the belief that the famous ballerina Pavlova had a secret process for preparing her shoes that gave her superior balance.
