Contrary to her expectation, she concludes that because the United States is such a melting pot of cultures, it is relatively easy for people from other countries to buy and prepare food that is familiar to them. Anderson collected personal narratives describing what used to scare informants as children. Included are stories of a child who saw part of a movie where a lion mauled a family, a girl who was afraid of the large black drain in the deep end of the pool, and a child who continues to struggle with her childhood fear of having her mother die.
