John Smith mission journal, typescript drafts, 1862-1864

Scope and Contents

Two drafts of a typescript of the compiled journal kept by Smith while serving a mission in Denmark, dated 17 May 1862 to 12 April 1864. The journal spans Smith's entire mission, including his journey from Salt Lake City to Denmark. Includes a letter from Gary Smith to Eldred G. Smith with notes about the transcription, which was done by Gary in 1963.

Emma James Johnson autobiography

Scope and Contents Handwritten autobiography with a typescript of the item. The history includes comments by John's daughter, Laletas Dixon. As a young woman Emma James migrated to Utah with the ill-fated Willie Handcart company. Emma describes how the decision was made to travel to Utah late in the season and gives many details on the nature of the journey and the tragedy which followed. She tells about the starvation, cold, hardships faced by her family, and the death of her father, William James...

William Dydamous Johnson letters to Brigham Young

Handwritten and signed letters, dated 29 Oct. 1875 and 16 Feb. 1876, and addressed to Brigham Young, the second president of the Mormon Church. Johnson asks for help in his personal finances and also writes about funds for the Deseret Museum.
