Arza Adams diaries

Scope and Contents Handwritten diaries in four volumes. Also included are photocopies of the materials. Adams mentions his youth and starts his diaries in 1830. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1836 and subsequently lived in Missouri, Illinois, and Iowa, and came to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1849.

Scope and Contents Handwritten autobiography with a typescript of the item. Adams came from Ireland, migrated to Nauvoo, Illinois, and later to Salt Lake Valley, Utah. He also lived in Springville, Spanish Fork, Parowan, and Cedar City, Utah. Adams writes about Jacob Hamblin's efforts to convert Indians, the preparations to meet the United States Army coming to Utah in 1857 and 1858, going on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and meeting Emma Hales Smith, the wife of the first...

James Allen and R. B. Mitchell letters

Scope and Contents Handwritten and signed letter, dated 16 July 1846, and composed at the "Headquarters Morm. Batt. U.S. Volunteers." Allen writes about the march to California and the necessity of protection against Indians. On the reverse of Allen's letter is found a handwritten letter, dated 21 July 1846, and signed by R. B. Mitchell, "Indian Agent." The item was composed at "Point aux Poules." Mitchell praises the conduct of the emigrating Mormons in general and with the Indians in particular.

James Lindsay papers

Scope and Contents Handwritten histories, a newspaper clipping, a biography of Agnes Watson Lindsay (1852-1940), and an autobiography of James Lindsay (1849-1938). James Lindsay was a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from Scotland. He migrated to Utah in 1862; settled in Heber City, Utah; and participated in the Black Hawk War against the Ute Indians. Some of the materials relate to the mail service in Heber City.

Agnes Smith Baxter autobiography

Scope and Contents Handwritten three-page biography of Agnes Smith Baxter by an unknown author. Within this biography is an account by Baxter of her voyage to America in 1866. Also included is a petigree chart of Agnes' family.

James I. Steel autobiography and family records

Scope and Contents Photocopy of a handwritten autobiography with family records apparently also copied by Steel. James Steel converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England and migrated to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1854. He later settled in Tooele County, Utah. Steel entered into polygamy in 1874. Also included are ordinations and patriarchal blessings of family members. Steel also writes about his visions and dreams.

Jacob G. Bigler autobiography

Scope and Contents Photocopy of a typescript of an autobiography. Bigler writes about his relationship with the first president of the Mormon Church, Joseph Smith (1805-1844), his life in Nauvoo, Illinois, his migration to Utah, and his life in Nephi, Utah. Bigler served on a mission for the Mormon Church in Ireland and was active in Mormon Church activities in Nephi.

Biography : Emeretta Phillips Thornton

Scope and Contents Photocopy of a microfilmed copy of a typewritten biography. Emeretta Phillips was born in 1854 in New England. She was a member of the Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-day Saints and migrated to Utah in 1861. She settled in American Fork. She married Oliver E. Thornton in 1873 and died 1934. Much of the account is in the words of Emeretta.

Seth Millington Blair diary and autobiography

Scope and Contents Typescript of an autobiography. Blair writes about his parents, his joining of the Mormon Church, his migration to Utah, his mission to Texas for the Mormon Church, and his life in Salt Lake City, Utah. He includes patriarchal blessings of family members. There are many gaps in the diary.
