James Lindsay papers

Scope and Contents Handwritten histories, a newspaper clipping, a biography of Agnes Watson Lindsay (1852-1940), and an autobiography of James Lindsay (1849-1938). James Lindsay was a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from Scotland. He migrated to Utah in 1862; settled in Heber City, Utah; and participated in the Black Hawk War against the Ute Indians. Some of the materials relate to the mail service in Heber City.

Milas Edgar Johnson autobiography

Identifier: MSS 948

Scope and Contents Typewritten excerpts of an autobiography. Johnson was born while his parents were migrating to Utah. He lived in numerous places including Fountain Green and Huntington, Utah. He states that he knew Black Hawk, recounts incidents with Ute Indians during the Black Hawk War, served as postmaster in Huntington, and was elected to the Utah state senate. The item was edited by family members who removed some material.

Alfred N. Billings diary

Identifier: MSS 636

Scope and Contents Photocopy of a handwritten diary kept from 21 May 1855 to 3 Oct. 1855. Billings was called to serve as a missionary to the Ute Indians in the Elk Mountain area of southeastern Utah. After some initial success the Mormon missionaries were forced to leave by the Indians. Also included are Billings' financial records from the 1850s and 1860s.

A biography of Alexander Williams

Identifier: MSS 459

Scope and Contents Typewritten biography. The year of the composition of the item is unknown. Kimball writes that Williams was a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who lived in Nauvoo, Illinois, migrated to Utah in 1847, had encounters with the Ute Indians, lived as a polygamist, and converted to the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

George Washington Bradley autobiography

Identifier: MSS SC 2768

Scope and Contents Typewritten copy of an autobiography. Bradley writes about being called to settle in Sanpete County. He was among the first settlers in Manti, Utah, and tells about life there, and contact with Ute Indians. Also included are three biographies of Bradley by family members. The dates of composition of these items are uncertain.

Scope and Contents Handwritten military orders and official correspondence plus photocopies. Also included is a hand-drawn map of the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation and nearby areas. General George Crook (1828-1890) sent orders to Fort Douglas directing that two companies be sent to assure that the road between Price, Utah and the Uintah Reservation be made passable for heavy freight. Scope and Contents Typescript with handwritten corrections and photocopies of the item. Boquist writes of her journey from Mt. Sterling, Van Buren Co., Iowa to California in 1862. She travelled on the Oregon and California trails staying three days in Salt Lake City, Utah, "a beautiful little city." The local inhabitants came to buy what they had to sell at higher cost than the items were worth, and they were warned by a Mormon widow against the tyrannical rule of Brigham Young saying many "were kept there...

Luke William Gallup diary

Identifier: MSS 660

Scope and Contents Typewritten excerpts from a handwritten diary. Gallup summarizes his activities monthly. Gallup settled in Springville, Utah, in 1851. He writes about encounters with Ute Indians, the Utah War, and the Mormon "reformation." He comments on Mormon polygamy and tells about the death of his wife. Also included are the patriarchal blessings given to Luke and to his wife, Lydia.

Silas Hillman autobiography and financial records

Identifier: Vault MSS 61

Scope and Contents Handwritten autobiography of Hillman describing his conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and his later experiences. He writes about the persecutions and problems the Mormons faced in Kirtland, Ohio, Missouri, and Nauvoo, Illinois. He also writes about encounters with Ute Indians during the 1850s following his migration to Utah. Also included are family financial records. Collection includes photocopy of materials.

George A. Hicks history of Spanish Fork

Identifier: MSS 284

Scope and Contents Typewritten history of Spanish Fork, Utah, which was signed by the author. The history concentrates on the era of the 1850s and tells about early schools, the arrival of settlers from Palmyra, Utah, problems with grasshoppers, and the war with the Ute Indians called the "Walker War."
