James I. Steel autobiography and family records

Photocopy of a handwritten autobiography with family records apparently also copied by Steel. James Steel converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England and migrated to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1854. He later settled in Tooele County, Utah. Steel entered into polygamy in 1874. Also included are ordinations and patriarchal blessings of family members. Steel also writes about his visions and dreams.

Scope and Contents Carbon copy of a typewritten autobiography by a man named Baynes who never presented his first name. The author of the item, son of Charles Baynes (1798- ), was born in Clinton, Georgia in 1824. He lived in Georgia, attended college in New Haven, Connecticut (probably Yale University), and eventually settled in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was disabled by a wound in the arm at the Battle of Shiloh in 1862. After the federal occupation of New Orleans in April 1862, Baynes moved to...

Included are two depositions by Benjamin Harrison regarding land suits; an appointment of a county sheriff signed by James Pleasants; appointments of six Justices of the Peace by Joseph Johnson, three by John Letcher, four by Henry Wise, and three by Francis Pierpont; and an appointment of county surveyor Joshua Pretlow.
