Scope and Contents "The Happy Child," manuscript verse bearing on the first leaf the name "Bethiah Hayward Willis Kingston," [Ulster County, New York?]. No date; early 1800s. Crudely-composed verse in a nice hand. Children sin after meeting the Devil who pays them money to deny the existence of heaven and hell. A virtuous little girl who warns them of this deceit is accosted by the devil in the churchyard. She casts him away in the name of Jesus and a comforting angel tells her she is not long for this world. ...
