Anti-polygamy legislation
Typewritten excerpts from laws passed by the United States with the intention of making the practice of polygamy a crime. The items are the relevant passages taken from the Anti-Polygamy Act of 1862, the Edmunds Law of 1882, and the Edmunds-Tucker Law of 1887. Also included is a signed typewritten statement by Edward V. Higgins (1858- ), notary public of Iron County, Utah, verifying that the excerpts were correct.
Charles Ambrose Foster appeal
Handwritten appeal dated 16 Oct. 1844 and filed on 21 Oct. 1844. Foster, a publisher of the Nauvoo Expositor, appeals a conviction for breach of ordinances in Nauvoo, Illinois.
An appeal to the president of the United States
Handwritten copy of a letter appealing to the president of the United States, James K. Polk. The item was copied in 1890, but the original was dated 1 June 1846. The letter states that the Mormons have been persecuted and appealed for aid. It is believed that Polk's call for volunteers to fight in the war with Mexico was an answer to this request. The "Mormon Battalion" was formed in consequence.
Mariano Arista letter
Handwritten and signed letter in Spanish dated September 16, 1848 and written on war department stationary. Arista expresses thanks for information on abuses in the army.
Arms for Texas
Typewritten book drafts with handwritten corrections. Kouray writes about how the Republic of Texas got arms to fight Mexico for its independence. The item was submitted to the Old Army Press for publication.
Virginia Armstrong autobiography
Typed autobiography. Armstrong joined the Army Nurse Corps in April of 1941. She served in Barnes General Hospital in Vancouver, Washington. She later went to Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver, Colorado. She was discharged honorably in July 1942.
An army of marksmen
Printed booklet and one typewritten manuscript of "An Army of Marksmen." The volume documents the United States Army's efforts to develop individual marksmanship by U.S. soldiers.
Chester Alan Arthur pardon
Handwritten pardon issued by the office of the president of the United States, Chester A. Arthur (1829-1886) and signed by him. The item pardons John J. Kelly of Utah for crimes of "bigamy or polygamy and unlawful cohabitation."
Deanna Johnson Nielsen autobiography
Typewritten autobiography for the Nurses at War project. Neilsen joined the military in 1975. She served during operation Desert Storm. She married Jay Neilsen in 1978.
