James H. Martineau certificates
Printed and handwritten certificates, bonds, and commissions. The items document Martineau's commission in the Utah Militia, his appointment as the Sheriff of Iron County, Utah, and his position as an alderman of Parowan, Utah. Seven of the manuscripts were signed by Brigham Young (1801-1877), the second president of the Mormon Church.
John Taylor certificates of copyright
Photocopies of printed certificates with handwritten additions. The materials were from the Copyright Office of the Library of Congress. The items were sent to John Taylor (1808-1887), third president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, granting him copyrights for two books. These items were entitled: "History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" and "Biography of Joseph Smith, American Prophet."
Augustus L. Chetlain letters
Handwritten and signed letters addressed to Brigham Young, the second president of the Mormon Church. Chetlain invites young to dinner at the Townsend House and writes concerning an invitation to Young's farm. Also included is a letter from Annie M. Chetlain, Augustus' wife, to Young thanking him for some strawberries.
Church business card
The folder contains a printed and signed business card from 1884. The item authorizes the transmission of messages relating to the business of the Mormon Church. The item was signed by John Taylor, third president of the Mormon Church.
The Church Under Brigham Young, 1844-1847
Handwritten and signed history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints while Brigham Young served as its president. Margarett Young writes about Brigham Young's leadership and his impact on the faith. The date of the composition of the item is uncertain.
Circuit Court injunction for Joseph Smith, Jr.
Printed and handwitten injunction dated March 10, 1843, signed by Jacob B. Backenstos The item is addressed to Joseph Smith, mayor of Nauvoo, Illinois, demanding a halt in further proceedings in the case of Charles R. Dana vs. William B. Brink. The action had been taken to recover $99.
Circuit Court recognizance
Handwritten bond dated September 7, 1838, signed by Joseph Smith, Jr. and others before Judge Austin King of the 5th Judicial Circuit Court. The bond was for $500.00 and bound Joseph Smith, Jr. and Lyman Wight over to the court.
J. Reuben Clark, Jr. papers
The great bulk of the J. Reuben Clark Jr. papers were inventoried in 1967. This register is only of the Clark papers that have come to the library since that time. This addendum contains a variety of papers that cover the full life span of Mr. Clark. However, the great bulk of the material here are his personal diaries and his financial records.
James R. Clark manuscript drafts and book
John T. Conk letter to Brigham Young
Handwritten and signed letter, dated 8 Nov. 1867, and addressed to Brigham Young, second president of the Mormon Church. Conk writes to Young to give up the "charge" of the "lower Mill" to John W. Young.
