Scope and Contents

Collection contains recordings and transcriptions of oral history interviews conducted by E. Dale LeBaron while he was visiting Africa. These interviews are with converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from various countries of Africa. The items were transcribed by the College of Religious Instruction at Brigham Young University. Back-up copies of the transcriptions are included on floppy disks. The collection dates from 1979 to 2000.

Walter H. Speidel interview

Scope and Contents Transcript of an interview conducted on 28 March 1985 by Burt Speidel, Walter's son, for the Ray Hillam military history project. Walter was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was raised in Germany. He told about the Mormon missionaries that had to leave the country in 1938, and he was afraid that Germany and the United States would have to fight each other. He was in the Hitler Youth that had meetings on Sunday which made it difficult for him to go to Church....

Gail E. Waller interview

Scope and Contents

Transcript of an interview conducted by Kelly J. Drake on 6 Aug. 1985 for the Ray Hillam military history project. Drake was in the United States Marine Corps starting in 1936 and later went into the United States Army in 1940. He served in North Africa for nine months and served in Sicily in 1943 with the ordinance section of the Seventh Army. He was later deployed to Germany in 1945 and met Russian troops on the Elbe River. Drake was sent home in July of 1945.
